Virtual “PB&J Summer Slam” kicks off August 1

Rutland, VT - United Way of Rutland County, Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging, and Project Vision have partnered to host Rutland County’s first virtual “PB&J Summer Slam,” set to kick off on August 1.

The PB&J Summer Slam, which will run through the end of August, will help area food shelves purchase items they need to restock their supplies.

“There is a significant need for food items given an increase in demand on food shelves during the summer months,” said Anna White, Nutrition Assistant and Wellness Coordinator with Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging. “Our traditional March collection event was postponed due to COVID-19, so we decided to transition the PB&J Slam to a virtual donation drive to continue to support our local food shelves.”

By participating virtually and making a monetary donation, participants will enable area food shelves and community cupboards to purchase what they need directly from the Vermont Foodbank. To provide perspective, the number of jars collected during last year’s PB&J Slam would be equal to about $2,200 in monetary donations to food shelves and community cupboards. Event organizers hope to exceed that number with the first PB&J Summer Slam.

“Now more than ever, people are looking to their local food shelves and community cupboards,” said Dan Warnecke, Associate Director of United Way of Rutland County. “Providing these organizations with a boost in funding will allow them to purchase the food that they need to help feed our fellow community members, neighbors, friends and families.”

The PB&J Summer Slam is designed to be a fun competition for local businesses, organizations, and community members. The business, organization or individual that raises the most funds will be crowned the PB&J Summer Slam Champion for Rutland County.
